MARINE DEBRIS
Marine debris is defined as any persistent, manufactured or processed solid material discarded, disposed of or abandoned in the
marine & coastal environment (UNEP, 2009).
Common items of marine debris include, plastic bottles, fishing nets and tackle, food packaging, crates, cigarette butts, straws, lollipop sticks, buckets, gloves, pegs, plastic bags...
In time marine debris breaks down into micro particles. These are ingested into the human food chain by way of fish, birds and seafood.
